We leveraged our decades in the entrepreneurial trenches to define and distill the three core disciplines of entrepreneurship and organizational effectiveness: Command of the Opportunity, Command of the Organization, and Command of the Self.

MEET THE FOUNDER: Colin VT Johnson
Johnson’s career in building new ventures started with design thinking in Stanford University’s Product Design department. His early career in technology innovation at GM/Delphi, HP, ADL and a think tank in Tokyo evolved into a 20-year focus on launching or leading startups that commercialized innovative technologies — two in aviation and a third in market research. Along the way, he learned countless lessons — including the realization that entrepreneurs appreciate and benefit from his help and coaching.
WHAT ARE THE THREE PILLARS?
The principles of the proverbial “three legged stool” are well understood. Three points of contact create a stable base that does not wobble. From the dolmen of the neolithic age to contemporary windmills in the North Atlantic, mankind has employed this principle of stability to efficiently and reliably hold the greatest loads.
TPL employs this notion in characterizing its “Three Pillars” of effectiveness and success in business. A sound grounding in each of the three domains gives you a foundation that “does not wobble.”
Command of the Opportunity, the Organization and the Self stand as our Three Pillars because each is unique in its qualities, but deeply interconnected with the other two.
- An entrepreneur or business who fails to establish tight product/market fit or a sustainable business model cannot grow a sustainable Organization. No matter how efficient the Organization, it will still come up short after it burns through its venture capital.
- An executive who cannot mobilize others to build an efficient Organization squanders the Opportunity and its strategic advantage.
- Perhaps most importantly, those who do not appreciate and develop their unique strengths and mental models cannot realize their fullest potential. They are more apt to misunderstand the nature of the Opportunity before them, or will inadvertently sabotage the effectiveness of their Organizations.
